If you build it, they will buy: Nissan confirms Silvia's comeback in 2010

(artist rendering, not actual car)

If the GT-R signifies Nissan's Innovation, the 350z signifies their heritage, then the Silvia (or the 240sx or the 200sx or the 180sx.....you know what I meant...) is the model that signifies their youth. Since the famous (relatively) low cost FR sport coupe ended production in August of 2002. Young drivers armed with a fresh license and too much Initial D anime + Option drifting videos, are all yelling and screaming like the AGK (Angry German Kid) on youtube, demanding the comeback of the FR icon.

Well kids, today is your lucky day....

(artist rendering, not actual car)
Admist all the GT-R coverage dominating the media, It has been reported that the Nissan "Silvia" has been confirmed by both the CEO of Nissan Carlos Ghosn and Nissan's COO Toshiyuki Shiga, and will be making its comeback in 2010 with a price point between 2,000,000~2,500,000 JPY.

Obliviously there are on information at this point on its spec other than it will be a FR sport coupe utilizing the new "Z" platform and possibility powered by a Renault engine.

Nissan had better give it a turbocharged four cylinder this time. With 250 Horsepower and a manual transmission. No turbo and they'll never sell enough beyond the first couple of model years.

Thats very true, if they don't do that then whats the point of bring back a legend.

This is great if Nissan brings back a legend, but would kinda be dumb b/c it would be competing with the Altima coupe. To many similarities in this artist rendering. I say cancel out the Altima coupe and put the Silvia in it's place and to agree with both of you it better be turbo.

As nice and Attractive(and it is damn sexy) as the Altima coupe is, it is still FF.

Nissan, as much as I love the nameplate, blows because the Z is their only FR car.

They can easily incorperate a 4 with their SC or a turbo setup. Please do so..

Doesn't it look like a SLK Benz?

They need to keep it smaller and lighter (important!) than the Altima coupe. No V6, use a 4 cylinder and and have an optional turbo version. Other than that, keep it RWD and throw in LSD and I will buy one.

What's going to end up is probably some bits and pieces from actual Nissans put together. The engine will probably the one used in the Altima's right now: the QR25, with the ECU's parameter tweaked and probably a turbo, making 250hp like the S15. Worst case scenario is another sub-3L V-6 engine finding its way under the hood. All this to satisfy the market. As long as Nissan is cooperating with a Mexican looking Renault CEO, there won't be any serious results. Renault said they were going to make the engine of the Versa, but ended up never doing so. What's gonna happen is that Renault will probably help Nissan make the carpet, mirrors, and some other useless stuff. /end rant

i would really like it if they build it in connection with the s15 chassis.
should be a 4 kicker too with turbo and a vlsd. for SE version. definitely should offered in manual.

if its possible pls put at leat a cupholder this time...

first thing Nissan has to do is change the design of the car. noone will buy this car sides some idiots that buy namebrand at any cost if it looks like a Civic/Altima/Benz clone. NOONE WILL WANT IT THE SAME. the 180/240/silvia was razor, was sleak, was rough, was strong, was beatin into submission, was ran through it's courses, WAS DRIVEN INTO THE GROUND LIKE A DEMON ON REDBULL, was a tuner/drifter/racer's car to wrench on and pick up girls in. if it looks like a civic noone will want it. BRING BACK THE ZENKI'S SLICK FRONT END AND !!!!BRING BACK THE 180 TAIL LIGHTS!!!! maybe mixed with the skyline taillights, this car WAS A LEGEND and those taillights are instantly recognized. *look at those tail lights... they're the same as the 98 silvia's* everyone knows that the early 90's version was waaay more loved, waaay more hated (by the way of putting a car on the pavement and making that car run hard and harder and harder til it ripped up the concrete it stood on), had better suspension, looked better all around, and there's never been another car that looked like it sides the Ford Probe but we all know that was made to answer the 240's reign in America. MAKE SOMETHING SICK, NOT SOMETHING THAT LOOKS LIKE THE REST OF YOUR LINE OF CARS. THIS IS THE 240, THE MONA LISA OF DRIFTING AND MOD TUNING, IF IT DOESN'T STAND OUT, GREASE MONKEY'S EVERYWHERE WILL DENOUNCE THE CAR'S NAME AND IT - WON'T - BE - BOUGHT. as for engine options if it's going to make it's mark at all and become a sellable market you have to make it usable to all genres... this is the SILVIA! my suggestions for this would be different engine options just like the original. and not seperated from here to Japan like before. what made this car a legend was grease monkeys, what made this car desirable was what you could do with it. what made this car the Mona Lisa of drifting and modding was the options available even for the poor kid. the base model should be a 4 cyl manual NA *call it the KA44DE....the 4 would represent the 4th version made...you had the SOHC 89, then the DOHC fastback, then the kouki/zenki* that even a beginner can work on... that's how you get an underground market. something that can be WRENCHED ON and easy to WRENCH ON. above that, one with all the goodies... and BRING BACK THE HICAS w/ a 4wd option. it would further increase the desire for the car...not only would the HICAS only attract mod buyers *it does wonders for roadracing* but the 4wd would make this car the king of tuner cars....but because of the drifting/modding scene IT NEEDS TO BE AN OPTION NOT A STANDARD OPTION! automatic and covertable should only be an option after the car sells a couple of years and grabs ahold of the market like the s13 did, IF AT ALL... above that a 4 cyl manual turbo *SR44DET* that would be an out of the box upgrade, but the KA44 would still match it with some modding and work. above that, all the goodies with a HICAS option... and the SR would be good for out of the box 4wd turbo. above that, along with the 350z, with a niiiice 6cyl manual Twin Turbo *interchangable with the 350z/GT-R RBDETT and call it the ...dunno you think of that... you can't use SR cuz that's 4 cyl, and you can't use RB cuz that's for the GT-R*......after all this... go back through the years and change all the recall bs/ all the problems that existed after the FASTBACK. like for instance...the common problem of complete engine failure in the SE-R's with the lack of an EGR... or maybe just a Catylic Converter that isn't going to break up and get sucked back into the engine.
again i say what makes a car sold is the markets... the street cred. you make another civic and ppl will just buy the civic so they don't have to worry about parts recalls. AND MOST OF ALL....VARIABLE VALVE TIME A SOLID BASE MODEL PART. keep the car light... and cheap... if a guy working on his car in a garage can't afford the specialty tools, or the parts, or info......IF YOU CAN'T WRENCH ON IT EASY... if you put a bunch of bs under the hood, the street credited race shops will denounce the name and not buy it. THIS IS THE 240!!
follow these guidelines and Nissan 240/180/silvia/zenki/kouki/and now..........thinking.........240 Samauri...but there's probably a better Japanese word to use... ;] would once again be a lusted after tuner car.... but don't forget... the majority of the creds that came from that line of cars was not it's style, was not it's name, it was the pure rage the car put to the pavement.... it was the guy that wrenched the engine together, ziptied the body together, and put the pedal to the floor in the desert, in the mountains, on the highway.

oh and don't forget the retractable sunroof...but for the cheap version.... the 4 cyl NA base model... put in the removable moonroof....stock option just like before. and please yes, one, just one, cupholder... or at least some way of adding one besides hanging a mesh one off the shift skirt. ;]

...God I hope they dont put a qr25de in it.

Did Chris Bangle design this one? Looks hideous!

I hope that they do not depart from the simple and sleek lines that the S Chassis line always had... The beauty that was had in the way the line from the A-Pillar to the C-Pillar connected with the the rest of the side profile's lines - in a manner that made it almost parallel to a road surface

As for performance, I do hope they keep the equation that the the predecessors set - economical, light weight, rear wheel drive car with decent power (from only a 4 cylinder engine) and the ability to extract more performance from the car.

If they do not deliver that, I will not buy it.

I love my (Current) S14 to death - and will NEVER consider selling it. And I would love it if Nissan pumps out another S Chassis in this day and age that follows the spirit and design of its predecessors - I WILL buy that car and nothing else.

how bout a QR20DET?

Ever seen a turbocharged QR25DE? On only 5 psi, I witnessed a car put down 260 whp on a dynojet.

OchnofConcrete,

your post needs a little bit of proofreading. It was very difficult to read and you also jumped all over the place.

That's GREAT news. Welcome back Silvia. Give us the 2002 version and I'll be more than happy. LOL That version was a jewel. In the meantime, I won't be getting rid of my 90 240sx or 90 Trueno anytime soon. Thank goodness, older nameplates.....GTR, Silvia, AE86, Challenger, Camaro, RX7 are making a comeback. Nicee :)

i love it from the first seen!!!

Anonymous said...

It better be RWD.

Anonymous said...

Still too damn expensive. $20K????

It needs to start at $17!!!! We don't need leather seats, navigation, heated seats, Power window door/locks, 17-18 in OZ wheels.

We need light, RWD, 4 Cylinder automobiles.

THATS IT!

I am an automotive designer by hobbie and I would love to get my hands on this new nissan. The 240sx has been my favorite car since I knew what cars were. I can't wait to see what they will do with this one.

meh,,

for 20k, id rather buy an s13 for 4k, and fix it up nice,,,

this will probably follow the same scenario as the mustang did,,, they got lots of sh*t ones that just had the name and badge.

but yeah, maybe (hopefully) nissan can get back to it's roots and recreate a car worthy of the silvia name,

that car up their looks crap,,, bring back the STRAIGHT lines like on the S13, and make it cheap with decent, easy to mod, engine.

and for god's sake; let it drift

Anonymous said...

It looks like crap!!!! Stop loking and show us the real car! All they needed to do was put it on the same platform and change the fenders and they couldn't get that right, it's a discrace to the silvia's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

If it isn't rear wheel drive it won't be recognized as a silvia but we all know nissan is not as stupid as mitsubishi( who could have made the eclipse a rear wheel drive ) and they will leave it as a RWD.can't wait to see this.

Honnestly- Disgrace to Silvia name. Nissan, please, whatever you do, don't go through with this. It is an embarasment to Nissan drivers and enthusiasts everywhere. Pay Volkswagon to take the design and burn the rest. I know most your production and research engineering money went towards that blastphemous automatic wanna-be GT-R, but with the leftover money you can still make a decent car. Just look at the S12. It was cheap, fun, and dime a dozen. It's not like this car is gonna run 12s with a stock non-turbo inline 4 cylinder motor. So please don't even bother putting a hefty price tag on it that most S-chassis enthusiasts wouldn't even consider financing. We don't need leather seats. We don't need your rediculous paddle shifters. We don't need your seat warmers or even cup holders. And we definately don't need to empty our wallets for your aftermarket Nismo performance parts that will "upgrade" the problem that you created in the first place by installing cheap factory parts. To the people who are reading this, please don't get me wrong. I own a Nissan. I love Nissan. But if i have to spend pretty penny fixing up a car so that it will perform correctly by buying Nismo/N1 parts; I'd rather just buy a Toyota. They may not have the RB26DETT Skyline, but the VVT-I 2JZGTE Supra will sure out-do it any day of the week. And doesn't cost nearly as much to originally purchase, maintain, or rebuild.
So please Nissan, i beg you, don't do it. I'm not the only one who feels this way.
